Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Handshake Solutions, a line of business within the Philips Technology Incubator, is working with Boeing to help further the mainstream use of clockless IC technology.
Under an agreement between the two companies, Handshake Solutions is allowing the Boeing Phantom Works advanced R&D unit access to its market-proven Handshake Technology and design tools for use in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Clockless Logic, Analysis, Synthesis and System (CLASS) project.
Boeing Phantom Works is the prime contractor for DARPA's CLASS project, which aims to provide an infrastructure for creating large-scale asynchronous circuits, thereby promoting their use in mainstream applications. Running since 2004, the project is currently focusing on developing demonstrator and prototype ICs to show the feasibility of clockless technology in challenging environments.
"The CLASS project highlights the growing importance of clockless design within the semiconductor industry," said Wouter Van Roost, CEO of Handshake Solutions. "We're very excited to be working with such a renowned and respected company as Boeing. This agreement is further evidence of the maturity and reliability of our Handshake Technology."
"We are pleased to be working with Handshake Solutions to develop next-generation design capability which will enable us to address growing issues with design closure, noise and power reduction, said Dr. Warren Snapp, director of Solid-State Electronics Development in Boeing Phantom Works.
Under the terms of the agreement, Handshake Solutions will provide technology and tooling licenses to Boeing and its partners in the CLASS project to help in the creation and assessment of demonstration clockless ICs. In addition, project team members will be able to make full use of Handshake Solutions' extensive tool, technology and design support services including full training.
